Comparable Company Screener

Build a search strategy from SEC 10-K data.

Descriptive

Start from one or more SIC codes, or seed the industry from a tested-party ticker and we will look up its SIC.

The keyword further constrains the SIC universe to companies whose latest 10-K full text matches it, via SEC EDGAR full-text search (filings from 2001 on). NAICS is mapped to SIC through a bundled, approximate crosswalk — SEC indexes filers by SIC, not NAICS, so confirm the codes.

SEC filings do not include legal incorporation date; this uses the company's first SEC filing year as a vintage proxy.

Structural

Drops companies whose most recent 10-K / 20-F / 40-F is older than the selected window — a signal the filer may be delisted, merged or dormant.

Financial

Leave a min/max blank to skip that screen. R&D / sales and inventory / sales help match a comparable's functional profile: low R&D and meaningful inventory for routine distributors, near-zero inventory for service providers.

Note: OECD cautions that comparables should not be rejected solely for making losses; document your basis. The loss screen is optional, so you can run it or leave loss-makers in. "Profit yrs" in the results table is shown for information only and does not filter the universe.
